We are inevitably faced with the never-ending challenge to a find a balance between our work life and personal life. It certainly is no easy task in today’s unpredictable and fast-paced business world. As we grow increasingly more connected through technology, it is becoming more and more difficult to separate work from our personal lives.
Our bodies and minds can only handle so much work and pressure before we eventually burn out mentally. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is not only essential for your success at work and personal life but it’s also important to your health, productivity and mental clarity. If you are looking for ways to achieve a better balance between your career and personal life, here are three tips to help you out.
Learn to Prioritize:
Establishing a balance starts by prioritizing. Oftentimes when we think of prioritizing, we think only of our work-related tasks. But, if you’re going to make an effort to strike a balance between work and personal time, you need to learn to prioritize the things that you want to do to as well. There’s only so much we can fit in a 24hr period. So, ensuring you have enough time left over for personal passions involves serious prioritization of tasks and to-do items. Drafting a list of things, you would like to do the night before is a great start. It is important to determine the most urgent tasks for the day and allocate sufficient time to complete them. it’s also beneficial to take a few minutes at the end of the day to assess how your time was spent which in turn will allow you to prioritize more carefully.
Allocate More “Me” Time:
You need time outside of work for rejuvenation. It’s essential to make time to simply be with yourself. It's important to remember that free time doesn't have to be available time. Be honest about your availability, your personal needs should not be pushed aside to be buried in work or chores. When we don't take care of ourselves, our ability to take care of the other things (and people) in our lives breaks down. You must give yourself permission to take at least an hour per day, just for yourself. Whether its attending an evening yoga class or reading a book, if you have to, set the alarm, schedule it on the calendar, or put it on your “to-do” list for the day and commit to it!
The ease of access and connectivity that our devices provide us with makes it increasingly difficult to truly "leave" work at the end of the day. Being constantly connected sets the tone that we should always be available and easily reached. Whether it’s day or night, you feel pressure to answer emails and respond to requests. If you are truly looking to find balance, it’s important to be able to unplug and leave work at work.
When you're at home and able to disconnect from work, you can actually increase productivity when you return to work the next day. Coming into the office with a well-rested and refreshed mind will allow you to more effectively manage the issues or tasks that you may have otherwise tried to quickly resolve while at home.
Social media can also be a pretty huge time-suck. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, you could be spending that time on another activity that actually helps you to unwind and recharge. Being able to cut ties with the outside world occasionally is important to recover from stress and will give us that all-important space that we need to relax.
Life gets busy and maintaining adequate balance between work and your personal life can present a definite challenge. Our circumstances and the world around us are constantly changing, and a balance is something that requires an ongoing effort to maintain.
